Faith, Redemption, and The Florida Gators.
It’s not the critic that counts...Presenting to a powerhouse college football program had been a goal of mine for years. It was something I thought would be a blast, and I felt the message would really help a team succeed as we were having tremendous success in high school with two Max Preps national champions and with other college sports.
Friends and colleagues began reaching out to connections at many programs only to be told no or not receive a response over and over again.
A teammate from the Navy who was also an All American from a Power 5 program made a direct recommendation to his former team’s staff...Still nothing...I was even turned down by my own college and high school alma mater football teams.
Although frustrating at times, I was at a point in life where I had learned long ago not to allow rejection to determine the worth of my service.
So I stayed the course. Patience and faith...hard work. Do things right. Treat people right. Hone your skill. I knew it was coming. But when?
I’m normally up early. This particular morning I slept in and woke up to my phone ringing. The number was from Gainesville, Florida...
I thought, “No way...but maybe...I better answer it.” I hopped out of bed trying to sound awake and answered the phone... “Jason this Coach Brown with the University of Florida Football Team...”
One year ago I had the blessed opportunity to present The Fundamentals Of Winning to the Florida Gators.
After the call I felt God smiling down because he knew if I could have chosen a college team to work with it would have been the Gators, and he waited until the timing was perfect...So I smiled back, because this isn’t the first time he’s fulfilled in my life.
I’m so thankful for everyone who’s told me no. Every no made the yes so much more enjoyable. Not in a cynical way. They had legitimate reasons and people are busy and nobody owes you anything. That also doesn’t mean it was the right call and can be frustrating...
The mistake we make with critics and rejection is allowing them to define us or make us bitter and resentful.
Don’t allow critics or rejection define your value, but absolutely let them motivate you. Don't aim lower, aim higher. Don’t get bitter, just keep getting better with faith your chance is coming, and it will often be fulfilled with something even better than what you would have been satisfied with.
Keep doing you with genuine intent. Move forward with faith and when you get your chance...absolutely crush competition with a happy heart.
The timing was perfect with an awesome staff that I really enjoyed meeting who allowed me to be on the sideline.
And although they didn’t know it at the time, I had to smile, because they were absolutely pounding my buddy’s team had who told me no.
